PUZZLE #352: Helter Skelter 6 (CONTEST PUZZLE!)

CONTEST!
PUZZLE #352
HELTER SKELTER 6

This puzzle contains a word suggested by Patron M. Sean Molley. Support me on Patreon at $15 or more per month to suggest one word or phrase for me to put into a puzzle every month!

This puzzle is also something that I haven't done in a long time (over 100 puzzles ago, in fact): a contest puzzle! Unfortunately, these contest puzzles may continue to be a rare sight in the foreseeable future, as when I told Grant Fikes that I was planning to turn this puzzle into a Contest Puzzle, he pointed out a pretty big loophole: those who got this puzzle early on Patreon may have an unfair advantage over those who don't (in this case, more time to solve it than usual), hence why his Contest Puzzles became separate posts and not his usual Wordy Wednesdays. In response, I've decided to dodge any potential pay-to-win scenarios by not letting Patreons know that a contest was attached to it until after they solved it, which seems to have worked out.

But anyway, back to this current contest. The prize for winning it is a copy of Octopus Crosswords by Brendan Emmett Quigley (basically, a book full of these Helter Skelter puzzles)! There will only be one winner for this contest (who will be selected at random), though if I get a high enough amount of solvers, it'll increase to two winners. If you don't want to enter this contest, you can still solve this puzzle and not partake in the contest, but you'll have to let me know if you do decide to opt out. So now with all that out of the way, here are the directions on how to solve it!

Each answer in this crossword variation starts at the indicated number, and then moves towards the direction of the next number (though it may or may not stop there). The direction of the last answer is to be determined by the solver.

Once the grid has been filled out, unscramble the gray squares to get this week's FINAL ANSWER: An 8-letter word

ANSWERS: Helter Skelter 5

Before I reveal the answers to "Helter Skelter 5", I should point out that the usual list of solvers is gonna look a little different from here on out. Before now, I've colored the names of people that are currently supporting me on Patreon in red, but starting with this Answers post, those Patreon supporters will be colored orange instead. The main reason for this is that the Blogger page which I use to schedule and type out my upcoming posts had a "mobile-friendly" redesign not too long ago which altered the default colors that I could use to change the text's hue. The normal shade of red that I use wasn't included in that set, so instead of trying to add a "custom color" (which keeps getting removed for some reason) or constantly editing the HTML code every time, I've decided to change that red hue to a shade of orange already included in the defaults, since orange is one of the colors used in Patreon's logo. So now with that long-winded explanation out of the way, here's the eleven people that have solved my puzzle from two weeks ago:
  • Grant Fikes ****
  • Cindy Heisler ****
  • Joe Bernard ****
  • Giovanni Pagano ****
  • Kevin Orfield ****
  • Patrick Jordan ****
  • Sam Levitin ****
  • Stephen Potter ****
  • Mom ****

ANSWERS: Helter Skelter 2

Happy New Year! I know this is usually a time to reflect on the preceding year, but outside of sports and entertainment, 2016 sucked eggs hard. And not just in World News, either; not only did I have a crisis about getting solvers to stay on this blog and not only did my last remaining pet die, but also my suicidal thoughts reached a fever point after the conclusion of this overlong election! It's almost enough to forget that I got a new solver and friend who works in the video game industry, that I've reached a milestone 100 puzzles on this site, and that this blog got mentioned by The New York Times...'s Numberplay blog! I'm heavily doubtful that 2017 will be any better (mostly because of a certain Golden Raspberry Award winner that I won't name) but I've survived the Terrible 2000s, so I can hopefully weather this storm as well. Anyways, here are all the people who have solved "Helter Skelter 2":
  • Chris Hendricks ****
  • Eric Maddy ****
  • Mom ***
  • Lynn Sweeney ****
  • Sam Levitin ****
  • Grant Fikes ****
  • Dan Simonds and Katie Moulton ****

  • Giovanni Pagano ****

ANSWERS: Helter Skelter

Before we reveal the answers to my "Helter Skelter" puzzle from a couple weeks ago, I got some news I'd like to share with you: this little blog of mine got mentioned by the New York Times! Well, technically, it actually got mentioned in their Numberplay blog, but it's still impressive nonetheless! You see, Yossi Fendel, one of my occasional solvers, was inspired by my "Coined Phrases" puzzle from not too long ago, and he sent Numberplay a poser inspired by it, and just last Monday, it finally got published there! If you want to take a crack at Yossi's puzzle, go to this link, and if you're stuck, the answers are in the comments section.

Now that I got the good news out of the way, Let's look at who solved "Helter Skelter":
