ANSWERS: Which-Way Words

It's been about two weeks since I've published my first collaboration puzzle (which you can still solve here, by the way), so now it's time for me to reveal the answers! Before I do that, however, here are a list of people who have successfully solved it:
  • Grant Fikes **
  • Eric Maddy **
  • Sam Levitin **
  • Christian H.P. **
  • Lynn Sweeney **
  • Adam Weaver **
  • Mom **
  • Tyler Hinman **
Now just click on "Read more" for the answers and some solver comments! (but no pictures, unfortunately; the clues and answers didn't exactly give me much to work with...)

The shaded squares spell out DIAMETER. If you start with the letter "M" and read the two resulting words going in separate directions, you'll get MAID and METER, which combine to make the FINAL ANSWER: METER MAID!

Paolo Pasco wasn't eligible for the solvers list (after all, he helped make the puzzle), but he decided to enter a joke entry for fun: "METER MAID. For some reason, the answer came to me really quickly ;)"

Solver Christian H.P. said "Cool puzzle!  If Paolo is looking for feedback, you might mention to him that it could be even more challenging if one of the lists (either ARROWS or WHOLES) was given in some order other than top-to-bottom (for example, alphabetically), forcing the solver to determine which ARROWS match each WHOLE.  Just a thought from a puzzler who loves a good challenge.  :)" [Actually, Paolo had nothing to do with both lists being in order, but thanks anyway!]

Solver Tyler Hinman said that this puzzle was "By far your easiest yet", although Paolo did most of it.

Solver Adam Weaver said that this was an "interesting puzzle. I'm wondering if there is a way to force people to solve more of the clues to get at the final. As it is, you only need to know the first letter of one arrow per line. Maybe there could be shaded letters down each side so you have to get all the clues AND their directions?"
